Who we are
In 2015, my Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Jason Hamilton, and I, began TestLauncher as a remote business. Back then, before the Covid-19 pandemic, remote work was much more rare, and an entirely remote company was even more so. Thankfully, it proved to offer our employees, and ourselves, what we had always hoped for: a better quality of life.
However, working as a remote team has its own set of challenges. We initiated Water Cooler Wednesday to help improve our team’s communication skills, boost their ability to socialize with one another, and allow us the ability to get to know our team on a more personal level, with minimal intrusion.
Remote teams, like TestLauncher, have employees that span the globe. As such, some team members work at different hours, and the Water Cooler Wednesday format gives everyone a space to talk whenever they are able to, instead of in real time.
This space also allows them the opportunity to talk about things outside of their work which generates a sense of unity; something that can be hard to establish when people work from different time zones across the world. And yet they are essential.
When leading remote workers, it’s imperative to find ways to create team cohesion so employees do not feel disengaged or isolated.
And with remote work here to stay, it’s essential to address the issue of team building to attract the best employees, decrease employee turnover, and increase employee happiness, which has a positive effect company-wide.
